2018 reading resolutions

Hello hello!
It's that time of year where for some reason you feel optimistic and positive about the future and attempt to try and make some changes.  In the spirit of the season, I'm going to talk about my reading resolutions for the coming year.

Read 35 books
Last year my reading goal was 20 books and I managed to read 24 this year. I'm going to be a little more adventurous this year and aim a little higher. I want to average at least 4 books a month, and 35 books during the course of the year.

Read Widely
I challenged myself to read more widely in 2017and it has changed the game in terms of how many books I end up enjoying. Reading from a variety of people with different sexualities, genders, ethnicities and nationalities has made a huge impact on my view of the world and my reading habits.

Read at least one non-fiction book a month
I tended to stay away from non-fiction this year, but towards the end, I caught the non-fiction bug and I'm never looking back. I've become so passive in my learning just binging youtube videos and I want to try reading instead.

Read more essay collections
I have not read one essay collection. Not even bad feminist. I know. 2018's the year baby.

Read more Philosophy
Now that I've graduated, I'm starting to think more and more about what I want to get out of life and how best to live it. Reading philosophy has opened my eyes to different ways of thinking and being and I want to continue that journey in 2018.

  • Read Friedrich Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil
  • Finish Marcus Aurelius’s The Meditation
  • Read Sigmund Freud’s The Psychopathology of Everyday Life (1901) and Civilization and Its Discontents and Introduction to Psychoanalysis (1917)

Read a biography
Following the success of Hillary Clinton's and Bernie Sander's biographies, I really need to have a crack at reading one this year.

Read more manga/graphic novels
I am a big anime fan. I used to read a lot more manga online but I've fallen out of it and want to fall back in next year.

Read more academic texts
Now I'm no longer at uni, I have nothing to push to venture out and reach academic texts. I really enjoyed reading them at university and I want to continue to do so.

Read three classics
I used to only read classics and this year I have read exactly 0 classics. I've been eyeing Earnest Hemmingway and Scott F. Fitzgerald.

Keep by TBR under 10
I've done pretty well this year, right now it's sitting at 6.

Shop consciously
I'm very conscious of taking care of this fragile little planet and am aiming to make an effort to make as much use of libraries and opp shops.

Authors to Read

Haruki Murakami
Murakami is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors and in the coming year, I want to read every single one of his books.

James Baldwin
I have heard so much about James Balwin and it's about time I got properly acquainted with him.

Chimamanda Adichie Ngozi
She is already of my favourite authors and I'd like to read the two books I haven't read by her and finish my collection.

George Orwell
I admire the motivations behind his writing and the way his books always have some form of commentary on society, so I want to finally get down to reading a few of his books.
